Why We Make So Many Videos

We just hit 10,000 subscribers on YouTubethank you! And now you might wonder: Why all the videos?

“You Say Scream, We Say How High” — a playful metaphor for how we go the extra mile at Soundly to bring your sound requests to life. Directed and produced by Ola Martin Fjeld and Antfarm, who have assisted us on several productions.

For us, video creation is more than marketing – it’s a practical tool for improving Soundly. Every short feature, tutorial, or behind-the-scenes video is part of our hands-on testing process. We use Soundly like you do: spotting sounds to timelines, experimenting with effects, and pushing the app to its limits. When we find workflow bugs, we (try to) fix them. We think this results in a better tool for everyone.

When the world needed whooshes, we delivered. Video by Daniel Eugene Lacey-McDermott, aka Captain Credible.

Video production is a great way to stay connected to the real-world needs of sound designers. We chose a career in sound design for that reason – fun! By actively engaging in various video projects, from product tutorials to playful experiments, we experience what works smoothly and what doesn’t. These insights influence our app development, ensuring Soundly keeps being fast, easy, and fun.

“On the Way Up” – A rare moment of seriousness from Soundly, with every team member involved—even our accountant on drums. Created for our 10-year anniversary. Directed and produced by Marius Rolfsvåg and Christian Loennechen, with music by Lasse Passage.

We also love sharing what we learn. Our YouTube channel is filled with footage from our recording adventures, Soundly quick tips, and most of the time, just our foolish ideas. We’re not stopping anytime soon – there are endless sounds to explore, stories to tell, and silly concepts to try out. So SMASH that subscribe button!

The premise of a guy obsessed with door sounds was too good to pass up—and Martin Starr loved it. Starring Martin Starr, written by Vegard Grubstad and Jesper Sundnes, and directed by Jesper Sundnes.

Because we engage so much in producing our material and consistently communicate with the very people who use our software and our sounds, we can identify areas of improvement. The Segments feature is an excellent example of this: after a video editor shared how tedious it was to find individual footsteps within a file, we built Segments to solve that problem, then showcased its time-saving magic in a video. This feature is just one of many examples where user feedback, paired with our own experiences, has shaped Soundly into the versatile tool it is today.

It took two of our in-house sound designers several million seconds to meticulously segment every sound—so you can save a few. Entirely made in-house, produced by Eirik Moltzau Olsen, and written by the Soundly team.

We frequently consult with and partner up with directors, writers, editors, and various post-production houses. These collaborations help us identify areas for improvement while taking the film industry’s pulse. Through these partnerships, we stay attuned to trends, techniques, and innovations that shape modern sound design. The feedback we receive shapes our development roadmap – and occasionally leads to some pretty wild video concepts.

Craig Smith discovered the original Wilhelm Scream, now preserved in Soundly’s library for future sound designers.

Soundly makes videos because it helps us build a better sound design tool. By working as sound designers, we keep learning, experimenting, and improving. Our videos aren’t just marketing, they show real techniques, highlight useful features, and tackle the challenges of sound design. If you want practical knowledge, workflow tips, and software built by people who understand your work, check out the Soundly YouTube channel, and SMASH that subscribe button!

We went to Iceland to record this video for our biggest Soundly update yet, packed with new features and improvements.
